University of Kentucky Ag Equine Programs

Short-Term Education Programs for Equine Industry Professionals

The University of Kentucky is located in Lexington, KY, which is the heart of horse country. No other area offers Central Kentucky’s access to the number of farms, veterinary clinics, sales facilities, training facilities, show facilities, and race tracks. Within this setting, UK’s Ag Equine Programs offers unique, short-term immersion professional training in the equine industry that can be tailored to suit the needs of the client. Groups may choose from an in-depth exploration of two to three of the following topics, or a broad survey addressing five of the following topics.

  • Biosecurity for International Equine Competitions
  • Equine Behavior
  • Equine Business Management and Economics
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Evaluating Conformation and Movement in Horses
  • Evaluating Equine Feeds and Feeding Programs
  • Herd Health and Common Diseases
  • Hoof Care/Lameness
  • Horse Farm Facilities and Management
  • Nutrient Requirements of Broodmares, Foals and Performance Horses
  • Parasitology
  • Pasture Management
  • Reproduction

Classroom material will be enhanced through supplemental excursions and active learning experiences, which, depending on your group’s needs, may include:

  • Area attractions, which will include tours of some of Central Kentucky’s famous farms and facilities
  • Hands-on training, which may include activities such as hay evaluation and body condition scoring
