Lloyds of London Gift Marks 15th Year of Partnership with UK's Veterinary Science Department
LEXINGTON, Ky., (Sept. 7, 2007) –Lloyd's of London Underwriters, Brokers and their Kentucky Agents recently presented the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center $45,000 for the continued support of The Lloyd’s Equine Disease Quarterly. This year marked the 15th anniversary of Lloyd’s support for this equine health research publication produced by the University of Kentucky’s Department of Veterinary Science.
Over its 22-year relationship with UK’s Department of Veterinary Science, Lloyd’s has given more than $800,000 in support for research and other activities. This support includes the production and distribution of The Lloyd’s Equine Disease Quarterly, an award-winning publication that provides timely research-based reports on some of the most important issues facing the equine industry. The Lloyd’s Equine Disease Quarterly currently reaches more than 18,000 readers in 87 countries and is translated into several languages. Available on the Internet, its articles are regularly abstracted by a variety of scientific and lay equine publications worldwide.
“Lloyd’s has been licensed in Kentucky since 1937,” said Julian Lloyd, chairman of Lloyd’s Livestock Committee and Bloodstock Underwriter at Hiscox. “Our longstanding support of the Department of Veterinary Science is further testament to Lloyd’s enduring and unique relationship with the commonwealth.”
Chip Harkins, president of Lloyd’s Kentucky Agents Association, agreed. “Lloyd’s is a critical financial partner in Kentucky’s equine industry, and as agents we are proud to play a role in that special relationship,” he said.
“Lloyd’s London, Underwriters and their Kentucky agents are to be highly commended for their unwavering financial support of The Lloyd’s Equine Disease Quarterly,” said Peter Timoney, Department of Veterinary Science Chair and infectious disease researcher within the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center. “The Quarterly occupies a unique niche as the only publication of its type disseminating timely information on equine diseases of topical interest and importance for the benefit of equine industries worldwide. Thanks to the generosity of Lloyd’s, it has been possible to put out this publication for the past 15 years.”
Roberta Dwyer, professor within the MaxwellH.GluckEquineResearchCenter, echoed those sentiments. "The Lloyd's Equine Disease Quarterly has grown over the past 15 years to be an internationally distributed publication providing factual information for the equine industry. None of this would have been be possible if it weren't for the generous financial support of the underwriters at Lloyd's, London, brokers and Kentucky agents. Their continuing support is critical to this educational effort," she said.
Each year, Lloyd’s representatives arrange a meeting in Kentucky, and during that meeting they traditionally present the check. This year’s meeting was held at the MaxwellH.GluckResearchCenter in Lexington.
Published four times yearly, the Quarterly is available at no charge. It is co-edited by three faculty members within the Department of Veterinary Science, Roberta Dwyer, Peter Timoney and Neil Williams.
Lloyd’s of London is a 318-year-old institution whose members underwrite risk in return for premiums and investment income. It is recognized as the world’s largest Thoroughbred horse insurer and, as such, remains committed both to supporting equine research and providing the insurance coverage essential to the well-being and prosperity of bloodstock interests worldwide.
