Polo Team

UK's Polo Team is a competitive team affiliated with the United States Polo Association that competes in the southeast region of the intercollegiate league. The team aims to provide a fun and safe learning experience in the sport of polo and welcomes all members.

There is both a male and female team. During a game, three members make up each team. Practice is held an average of three times a week at West Wind Stables and the Kentucky Horse Park. The team's main supporter is the Lexington Polo Club and the team's coach is nationally-acclaimed professional player and Lexington Polo Club manager Jorge Vasquez.

The UK Polo Team already has a history of success. The women's team won its first national championship in the spring of 2010 at the University of Virginia, soundly defeating well-established teams. In 2011, the UK Girls Polo Team completed its season at the United States Polo Association National Intercollegiate Championships at Cornell in Ithaca, NY, and won its first match against Cal Poly Pomona with a score of 21-9. Although the team did not win nationals, it was awarded 2011 Best Playing Women’s String for its team of seven polo ponies.

Over the years, several people have donated their own polo gear, mallets, knee guards, helmets and tack for the ponies. The team has 15 ponies that are kept at West Wind Stables in Lexington. Members of the team work together to take care of these ponies, which includes feeding, watering and turning out the ponies every day.

Team practices are held three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, with private lessons offered on Sunday afternoons. Practices consist of scrimmages and drills that start around 6 p.m. and last about an hour. Games are held at the Kentucky Horse Park and Westwind Stables. Prospective members are invited to attend team practices to learn more about the team and sport.
